INTERNSHIP SUMMARY
I have successfully completed my internship at the ESL Intensive Program at Rhode Island College, located in Providence, RI. As the program intern, I was assigned with multiple tasks and duties that serve the entire 5-levels-based English program. I assisted with office management, students tutoring, and class observations. I also led the Conversation Club class, which was an optional set for program and non-program individuals who wanted to improve their English speaking skills to a higher proficiency.
The ESL program at Rhode Island College provided me with a hands on experience teaching an ESL class that contained students from different backgrounds and nationalities. As a future career goal, I plan to teach English for incoming college students and adults who want to either pursue an academic journey or a career journey. As a previous ESL students, I had some knowledge of what international students needed as studying and learning materials to better serve their weaknesses. Therefore, the ESL program at Rhode Island College afforded me with the necessary materials I needed to fully and completely fulfill my duties. And also because of this internship, I expanded my connections network with various departments at Rhode Island College. Hence, I was able to secure a graduate school acceptance in the College of Education, TESL program. I believe this step will serve my future goals in becoming an ESL teacher.
My biggest and greatest accomplishment throughout this internship is being able to create my own ESL lesson plans and also being able to teach them. Hence, I was able to successfully deliver my ideas and thoughts to the students. Having one-on-one sit downs with the students was also a great achievement and a perfect future-teacher preparation. Every Monday I would lead Conversation Club class and teach the lessons I planned. This hands on experience provided me with an overview of how ESL classes are run and taught, keeping in mind various and crucial elements that you’d only find in ESL classes.
Again, after having done all these tasks and assignments throughout my internship, I now have determined my future career as an English as a Second Language teacher somewhere around the globe. Over the last 13 weeks, I was able to work with different students who came from all over the world to enhance their career chances by developing their English language skills.
