Ever since I was young, I have always loved languages and cultures because they carry beauty and thought. Despite the fact that the study of languages seems monotonous to many people, I find it as an unfathomable ocean of fun. My initiation in the English language started from ABC on, then read simple passages, and later moved onto the beautiful essays and poetry and at last plunged into the classics by literary masters such as William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Robert Frost, and Thomas Eliot.
Being a non-native speaker of the English language has made me go through the beauty of learning it. Ever since I was young, I have always wanted to continue my college education in the United States. Although English is taught in public schools in Saudi Arabia as an official course, I did not think it was enough for me as I was not able to practice the language thoroughly. Therefore, I enrolled in multiple private English schools back home and abroad that recruit native speakers of English as instructors. As a result to that, I was able to learn the structure of the language, and also practice it with native speakers tremendously. Consequently, I was not only well prepared to travel to the United States and continue my studies, but also dive into the great diverse culture of its people. Because I needed high proficiency in English to continue my higher education and I received it properly, I now want to do the same for people and students who can’t afford to attend private schools and want to continue their education either at home or abroad.
When I began my studies in the United States, I had the choice of pursuing my undergraduate degree in either Computer Engineering or English, and I chose English for two major reasons. One of which is my passion for languages and their histories, and the other reason is because I want to go back home and teach it to other people who will need it throughout the course of their lives. My undergraduate studies in English at the University of Rhode Island provided me with an overview of the history and the literature of it. Therefore, I not only studied the basic background of English as in grammar or writing, but also studied its literature throughout its periods beginning from the Elizabethan Era and Shakespeare in the 14th century going through modernism and postmodernism periods and ending in the Avant-garde period in the 20th century.
On Spring 2018, I acquired an internship at the ESL intensive program at Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island under the supervision of Professor Laura Faria-Tancinco, who earned her M. Ed in TESL at Rhode Island College. Throughout the internship, I taught, co-taught, and also observed a couple of ESL classes. Alongside these tasks, I helped with office management, student tutoring, and curriculum planning.
A few years from today, I shall be ready to establish my own private English school back in Saudi Arabia. I plan to help people and students who need to start from scratch or even improve their English to a higher proficiency. I plan to recruit native and near native speakers of English and have other communication materials and means for the students. I believe, since English is the world's most dominant language in various fields, that everyone deserves to have the proper chance to learn it like I did.
